Why does the jetty server run in standalone mode?

I am using Jetty and I am trying to find out why the server is running in standalone mode instead of embedded mode.
The documentation says that the server runs in standalone mode if there is not a ServletContext in the app class or if a ServletContext has been provided. It sounds like in embedded mode, ServletContext is supposed to be provided as a singleton bean, but I am not getting that (even though my JNDI lookup to the Container fails).
