The Republican-led House of Representatives on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution stating that the conflict was a “noble goal” and that “unnecessary civilian and military casualties were regrettable,” but not a “failure.”
Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, described the vote as an “opportunity to celebrate the events of our history, especially our military efforts in Iraq, but also to reflect on where we are today.”
“It’s an opportunity to remember the strength of our nation in standing together in times of trial, and the importance of what we do when the chips are down,” he said.
But Democrats have taken a different view, saying the war has been a failure for American troops and Iraqi civilians alike.
“I think it’s a sad day,” Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., said during a debate on the resolution. “I think the war in Iraq has been a mistake from the beginning.”
Republicans have long favored preserving the Iraq War legacy, especially the troop surge that began in 2007 under then-President George W. Bush, and which was credited for ending the terrorist insurgency.
The House also overwhelmingly approved a resolution by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., to authorize the deployment of an additional 400 U.S. troops to Afghanistan. She said the legislation was needed to prevent the Taliban from regrouping after U.S. and NATO forces recently conducted an offensive against militants in southern Afghanistan.
The Senate is currently debating a version of the bill, which includes an amendment allowing U.S. troops to be deployed to Iraq.
