Initializing a thread: New Thread vs run()

I have the following two code snippets which I understand behave differently when being run. I have seen this question and answer and I understand that when the second thread is started it is initializing the thread.
I was just wondering why is the second way of doing it different from the first one? What would be the reason for this?
