The term “CAD” is short for computer-aided design, which describes a system for the computer-based production of three-dimensional drawings. Most CAD programs use a graphics processor (GPU) to display graphics and manipulate objects. Licensing
Autodesk has two license models: the standalone model and the non-license-based model. The standalone model allows only Autodesk products to be used with AutoCAD, whereas the non-license-based model allows the use of Autodesk applications with AutoCAD. The non-license-based model is available for AutoCAD LT versions 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, which allow use of only Autodesk applications, not Autodesk products. In 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, the non-license-based model was referred to as the new-users model, which did not allow the use of Autodesk products. In 2016, Autodesk changed the non-license-based model to allow the use of Autodesk products. In 2017, the non-license-based model was changed to allow the use of Autodesk products.

Open-source version
Autodesk also maintains an open-source version of AutoCAD called OpenAutoCAD. The source code for the project can be found at GitHub. Development is currently being managed in an open-source version of GitHub called GitHub for Windows.

History

Autodesk acquired Drawsoftware, Inc. in October 1993 and added vector drawing capabilities to the company’s AutoCAD line of products. The company was renamed to Autodesk Inc. in August 1999. In December 2003, the company rebranded the AutoCAD product line under the name AutoCAD. The company transitioned to the „Autodesk“ brand in May 2008.

At the start of 2008, Autodesk unveiled AutoCAD-XML, a new file format specification based on XML, allowing a common way to exchange technical information across CAD software.

On May 12, 2014, Autodesk announced that they would be separating the video editing capabilities from its motion-graphics products into a new company, BlackMagic Design. As of July 6, 2014, Autodesk discontinued both Maya and 3ds Max in favor of the 2019 release of Arnold.

On September 14, 2014, Autodesk was hit with a $20 billion lawsuit by potential investors for engaging in securities fraud.
