In order to test different volumes and frequencies without outputing a sine wave, it uses a virtual oscillator with internal volume knob and a real sine wave generator for each frequency.

The square wave, also called sine wave, is a mathematical function that, if graphed, looks like a perfect sine wave. Square wave with no phase offset (0 degrees) is useful for setting the volume on the output device, while a phase offset value of 180 degrees allows to modify the starting volume of the output.

For best results, the values for the volume and phase offset should be entered in terms of the smallest absolute value of the wave’s frequency that will still be audible.

This software does not affect Windows clock. As far as I tested, the application will not stop clock, and it will not turn itself on during the processing (it’s on via low power CPU usage). It requires just about 100 kb of memory, enough to run on „high memory“ systems (any Windows version prior to Windows XP, with either 1 or 2 GB of RAM). It uses DirectX, and it doesn’t care much for your system’s CPU speed.

In this application, you can specify frequency and volume using a single frequency and volume control, or you can have the application calculate your frequency based on the current volume and an specified frequency range. In the latter case, you can specify your range in terms of decibels, cents, or other system-dependent units.

This application allows you to have a single volume control for the two channels (right and left) of your system.
