The Solution Clone application was designed to be a small utility that willallow you to clone an existing solution, renaming it as you do so, and updating references inside the various files.
At the current time, Solution Clone is aware of the following types of files within your projects that it does more than simply rename and move. These files will be modified to update any references to the old solution name as they are moved. These file types currently include:
.sln – Visual Studio Solution Files
.vbproj – Visual Basic Project Files
.csproj – C# Project Files
.build – Build files used by NAnt and other build mechanisms
.nant – NAnt scripts
.log4net – Log4Net settings file used by the BizTalk Deployment Framework
.btdfproj – BizTalk Deployment Framework Project
.xml – XML files to handle any other data included

I have developed a small utility that will allow you to clone a solution to a new name. This clone can be renamed to a new name in the same or a different folder location. This clone solution is also intelligent enough to update any references in your solution files to the new solution. Currently this includes all references to any solution specific.dll’s,.exe’s, xml files,.cs files,.xml files and even any references to.vb files. However, this utility is far from perfect and it is not at all guaranteed to update any references correctly. Solution File

The Solution File contains the various information about a Visual Studio solution. It has been taken from the solution metadata in the.suo file which is hidden by default.

Project Files

Visual Basic and C# projects share a lot of similarities, and there’s no real reason to differentiate the projects from each other. However, some differences do exist. Visual Basic projects can have files named such as App.vshost or Global.vb, while C# can have files named in a similar way but with.cs instead of.vb.

Build Files

The build files are used by your build manager (such as NAnt or Xcode) to build your projects. These files will be renamed by Solution Clone, but will need to be renamed back by your build manager.

NAnt Scripts

NAnt is an open-source tool for building solutions and projects on Microsoft Windows-based operating systems and is usually used for continuous integration.

Log4Net is a simple, lightweight logging utility for.NET Framework applications. It helps you easily control the output of your application by providing a structured approach to the addition of logging code, along with the flexibility of adding new output sinks at runtime.

BizTalk Deployment Framework Project

The BizTalk Deployment Framework, or BDF, is a project type that was introduced in Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 R2 and was included in the Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008. It was designed to help simplify deployment and configuration of BizTalk Server components.

Build Notes:

If your solution contains solution-level references to external projects, you will have to manually rename the references to avoid errors when they are being overwritten. Solution Clone will attempt to update these references automatically, but they will only be renamed and updated if the project referenced by the solution is also included in the solution’s project file.

How to use Solution Clone:
Solution Clone is able to clone or backup your solutions as described in the previous section.
To backup your solution:

In Solution Clone, click the File menu and select Save.
Select where to save the.sln file you are currently looking at.
Select a location, then click Save.

To clone a solution:

In Solution Clone, click the File menu and select Clone.
Select the.sln file you would like to clone.
Select a location, then click Clone.

When you have completed the Clone operation, Solution Clone will display a confirmation message. If you choose to do nothing, the current set of files will be renamed and moved. Otherwise, Solution Clone will rename and move your files.
After a solution is cloned, Solution Clone will prompt you with a message similar to the following:
Do you want to update any assembly references, class libraries or other settings?

How to fix a failed cloning operation:
Solution Clone cannot fix any problems with a cloning operation. If you encounter any issues, then it is highly recommended that you use the back-up function.
If a cloning operation fails, Solution Clone will display a message similar to the following:
Solution Clone encountered an error during the cloning operation.
Here are some suggestions that may help you fix the problem. These solutions may be safe or unsafe.
* Choose the Save option and restart the Application
* Uninstall the program, and re-install it

It is recommended that Solution Clone only be run from a development machine. It does not do any harm to run it from a test or production machine. However, it is more likely to cause problems if you do run it on the actual production machine.

Solution Clone runs from the command line. It is easy to install as an example of an unattended Windows Service, by installing as an Exe, and then following these instructions to setup a Windows Service.
