ngrep is a pcap-aware tool that will allow you to specify extended regular or hexadecimal expressions to match against data payloads of packets.

Installation Instructions
To install ngrep from source, you can use these commands:
./configure
make
make install
You’ll need some GNU/Linux tools installed, such as:
autoconf, bc, bison, flex, gcc, gperf, gsed, hexdump, ncurses, nroff, pkg-config, readline, subversion, etc.
On Ubuntu systems, these should already be installed:
autoconf, bison, flex, gcc, gperf, gsed, hexdump, ncurses-devel, nroff, pkg-config, readline-dev, subversion, subversion-tools, tk8.4-dev, tcl8.4-dev
After the install completes, you’ll have some kind of ngrep binary executable in your PATH. You can use it:
$ ngrep_1.0 –help

How to use ngrep:
ngrep has traditionally been used to debug plaintext protocol interactions such as HTTP, SMTP, FTP, etc., to identify and analyze anomalous network communications such as those between worms, viruses and/or zombies, and to store, read and reprocess pcap dump files while looking for specific data patterns.
On the other hand, it can be used to do the more mundane plaintext credential collection as with HTTP Basic Authentication, FTP or POP3 authentication, and so forth. Like all useful tools, it can be used for good and bad.

After grepping the packets, you can reassemble them into new packet capture files. You can apply the same logic to the incoming packets and keep these files and reassemble them into a new file too.

Many of the regular expressions supported by GNU grep are still supported, but for packets of any size, a very short, 2 line instruction set is used instead of a regular expression syntax.

ngrep aims to provide most of GNU grep’s common features, albeit on the network layer.
Traditionally, users have used the Linux command named tcpdump, or, more specifically, the GNU version of tcpdump, to get an overall picture of a network. You can use this tool to tell the hostnames and IP addresses associated with which network protocols are being exchanged, as well as other data like MAC addresses and port numbers.
It’s become the tool of choice to help debug (or steal) plaintext credentials across many services like FTP, HTTP, POP3, and so forth.
ngrep changes this by combining all of GNU grep’s common features into a network packet sniffing tool.
This means that the user has all of the ability of tcpdump, but instead of being able to manually specify which programs you want to sniff, you can specify extended regular or hexadecimal expressions and have them be automatically matched against packet payloads. You can also use the ‚-F‘ flag to specify a BPF filter, and ngrep will attempt to understand and apply that filter’s logic as if it were a ‚-f‘ flag, allowing it to be automatically matched for packet payloads.
