The key question is the question of how to think about and assess the question of what we do to each other in the pursuit of good. And ultimately, the first step is to figure out what we mean when we talk about ‚good‘.

Another way to put it: Where is the line between selfish and selfless, between self-ish and other-ish?

I’m reminded of a talk Edward Herman gives in which he talks about the history of economics. (This is also a companion to his book, which was recommended in a recent post, Capitalism Was Not Escaped By Economists.) He notes that the first clear articulation of what is now called the self-regarding preferences principle is given by Smith. This is where Smith says the only action that can be expected from a person is one that promotes his own happiness. It’s time for Smith to get some loving from Marx. (I can’t tell if this is helpful to the conversation or whether it’s just me being hyperbolic.)

Anyway, the basic point is that even Smith is perfectly clear about what we’re not doing for others, which is harming them. It’s just that he has no language for this. Indeed, he doesn’t have any clear language about what we do to others for the sake of ourselves. The language of the theory of interdependence has been dominant only since Smith.

On the self-regarding side, what can we do to ourselves (and to the non-consenting others) for the sake of ourselves? There are all sorts of unpleasant things, but the original reference to self-harm, as opposed to the agents making a choice to increase their own happiness, is to burn oneself on a pyre. (I’m talking about voluntary and non-voluntary, and whether the latter is ultimately related to cooperation or coercion.)

I’m reminded of what a friend once said about his daughter: „She drives me nuts.“ It’s not that it’s not that she drives him nuts. It’s just that it’s also that he doesn’t do what she wants him to do. (And do other things, like trying to parent. But that’s another story.)
