Why did Cassandra take so long to write?

After finally finishing the Cassandra book, it seems pretty clear that the whole point of Cassandra is to get the write performance of SQL. I understand that the more databases, the more likely you’ll have a cache miss, but with Cassandra, you’re only getting 1 to get.
After the books conclude, I’m reading (1/2 to read) a number of articles on internet where the write performance of Cassandra is being compared to MySQL and SQL Server. To my surprise, the performance was not that great, and in some cases worse than what you’d get with SQL Server.
A few of the experiments show that the performance degraded as the write increased (page 58 of the book). According to this article (CSQA column family per day), it was written on an N1-600x series.
So my questions are:

What are the numbers being used in these comparisons? Is this just what’s shown in the book or in real life?
The write latency seems to have increased (page 58), and it seems to have gotten worse in the newer machines. What exactly is the reason for this?
