For the beginner, this article provides an introduction to the basic tools available in AutoCAD. It is designed for AutoCAD users who want to learn how to perform simple drafting tasks in AutoCAD from scratch. Although this article assumes a basic understanding of the use of AutoCAD, it may also be read by experienced AutoCAD users. This article explains the basics of the user interface, terminology, and available commands.

What Is AutoCAD?
AutoCAD is a computer-aided drafting (CAD) and design application. CAD is a general term for software tools used to design mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other products. Many CAD programs provide various options to allow you to design these different types of products. AutoCAD is one of the most popular CAD programs because of the many features it provides. You can create 2D and 3D drawings, perform various drafting operations, and import and export drawing files. AutoCAD offers a broad range of features that allow you to create designs for any size project. You can create architectural designs, mechanical design plans, and product designs. AutoCAD supports industry-standard file formats, such as DXF and DWG.
The AutoCAD User Interface
The AutoCAD user interface is accessed by opening the AutoCAD application and clicking on the “Open” icon. As shown in Figure 1, the application window contains the name of the current drawing, as well as a title bar with a file name, date, and time. You can save your files to a hard drive, a server, or the cloud. Each of these locations has its own advantages and disadvantages. The default location of a file in the Windows operating system is your current desktop. It is accessible by pressing the “File” and “Save” buttons on the application window.

Notes
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, before the release of the C++ programming language, Autodesk used the Visual Basic programming language for customization. The Visual Basic classes were later released as part of AutoLISP.
AutoCAD may use a third-party file format such as PostScript, PDF, or Portable Document Format (PDF). AutoCAD can convert some of its own native formats to these. The native formats are native to AutoCAD, but they are used for electronic print-outs of drawings. The native formats are: DWF, DXF, DGN, PDF, JPG, PNG, PostScript (PS), TIF, TIFF, and TFW. Some native formats (such as DWF and DGN) are also used for electronic transfer of drawings, thus meeting the graphic formats needed by email and the Internet.
AutoCAD also supports the AutoLISP programming language. This language was developed by the Autodesk corporation to allow users to add custom code to the AutoCAD product. AutoLISP is a programming language consisting of a source file (.lsp) and a load time (.lspc) file. It is an application-level programming language that allows software developers to add AutoCAD functionality to their programs.
AutoCAD’s online help provides a number of examples for AutoLISP programmers.
A number of Autodesk-developed applications have been developed using AutoLISP.
Autodesk Exchange (Autodesk Exchange Apps) is a collection of downloadable applications written using AutoLISP that provide AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT functionality. The two most notable applications are ARCHITECT 3D and BIM 360 Architect. Both applications are 3D models of architectural buildings, and the former can also import and export 3D-modeled building data. These applications allow for coordination between the technical and architectural professions.
All of the AutoLISP-based applications are written in an object-oriented manner. AutoLISP provides an abstraction layer for developers. It allows code written for one interface to be reused in programs for other AutoCAD types.
There are also a number of Autodesk Exchange Apps that offer business-level functionality, such as the Business Exchange App, which can read and write in both flatbed and drum printers; an inventory tracking and management app for warehouse management; a demand planning and scheduling app for real

Add an arrow to link a text label or command. Add an arrow to link a text label or command to draw a line, surface, or other object, without having to manually enter coordinates. (video: 1:30 min.)
Re-use the text style of another object. Using the Add or Replace feature, you can quickly re-apply the text style of a text label, text box, drawing parameter, or drawing object to a different location. (video: 1:23 min.)
Add custom grips to any toolbar or ribbon button. Your custom grips appear on toolbar and ribbon commands in all drawing environments and layout views, including mobile apps and web apps. (video: 1:48 min.)
Automatically turn wireframe lines into arrowheads. Add an arrowhead on wireframe lines and boxes to quickly indicate their edges. (video: 1:40 min.)
Add custom interactive overlays and gestures to any toolbar or ribbon button. Your own custom overlays and gestures appear on toolbar and ribbon commands in all drawing environments and layout views, including mobile apps and web apps. (video: 1:44 min.)
Use the interactive dynamic toolbars to dynamically change toolbars and ribbon menus. Customize your dynamic toolbars to include your favorite toolbars and ribbon menus from any drawing environment or layout view. (video: 1:49 min.)
Automatically apply your drawing templates and drawings to designs. When you open a project, AutoCAD automatically loads any drawing templates and drawings you previously added to the project. (video: 2:08 min.)
Add dimensions on curved lines. Curved lines in your drawings provide an easy way to add dimensions. (video: 1:33 min.)
Show and hide commands. Using Command Groups, commands for the same function are grouped together and can be used with a single keystroke. (video: 1:38 min.)
Use style icons for labels. A new label type provides a convenient way to insert labels in your drawings. You can choose from a wide variety of label styles. (video: 1:41 min.)
Insert common symbols into your drawings. You can easily insert common drawing symbols such as lines, arcs, rectangles, and circles. You can also use the new Drawing Commands feature to insert commands and properties. (video: 1:27 min.)
