Carousel is a free software that can connect VoIP calls to ordinary telephone lines and vice versa using one of a number of professional telephony devices.
It works as a virtual FXO gateway. You install it as a service on any Windows PC. SIP protocol VoIP calls will be directed out to standard PSTN analog lines through the CAHTA, CallURL, Synway and other telephony boards and telephone line USB devices (green line on diagram below). Likewise, calls made to a standard telephone line can be directed to an internal VoIP network configured with a virtual PBX (eg. Axon ) via a telephony device and the Carousel software (blue line on diagram below).
This is ideal for businesses that wish to take advantage of the emerging VoIP technology but still retain standard telephone line(s) for incoming and outgoing calls and where Broadband or a SIP Gateway providers are not available.

When you place a VoIP call from a computer using a PCI telephony device or a USB telephony device such as a telephone to a standard telephone line, the outgoing telephone call is converted to the SIP protocol and transmitted over the network to the destination (PBX). If the destination is also a VoIP based services or a line, then it converts the signal to the standard PSTN protocol and the signal is transmitted to the destination. The incoming call to a VoIP (SIP) based line is converted to the standard PSTN protocol and received by the computer which then places the call to the destination PSTN number.
You can also use an analog telephone to a VoIP PBX. You can convert an analog line to the standard PSTN protocol and receive it on the VoIP PBX. You can receive calls on the analog line and convert them back to the SIP protocol to place the calls to other destinations. Carousel has a fully featured PBX also.

CSipSim, an open-source VoIP simulator for Windows Phones, is a small application that emulates either the IP-PBX, or the analogue PBX of Windows Phone 8. CSipSim is a simulator, meaning that an operator of a Windows Phone 8 and a computer need to be running the simulation software at the same time when placing and receiving calls.
The Windows Phone 8 emulates a real analog telephone, and provides for VoIP services when used in the SIM Application Mode. If the software is not used in SIM Application Mode, CSipSim will be able to make and receive calls to and from any PSTN or SIP based calls.

Most of the remote stations do not have a fixed address. They are connected to the network via a modem dial-up connection or IEEE 802.11b wireless router. Currently, in order to get an address assignment, you must have a valid IP block and be able to provide the details of how to route your SIP traffic to them.
To assist you with this, Carousel has an SIP registration feature that allows your remote stations to dynamically register with a SIP Registrar (tapi2). During setup, you will enter your Registrar’s hostname and port number. Carousel then starts a SIP registration client on your computer that interacts with your Registrar (tapi2) on your IP gateway or server. This is the process for a non-hardware VoIP card. To register with a hardware VoIP card, you will need to set up your Registrar (tapi2) so it will reach your board. This can be done using softphone or the „Configure SIP Registration“ tab in the Carousel application.
Signing Up for Carousel
The Carousel software uses the SIP protocol to communicate with other SIP or SIP-based servers. The easiest way to obtain this software is to register with a SIP Registrar (tapi2). The Registrar will assign a SIP address to your business to which calls will be routed.
It is extremely important that your Registrar is configured to route your calls to your business.

Carousel is free software that is easy to use. All you need to do to get the software running and to configure it for your project is the following:

Setting Up a Remote Phone Station
Make sure that your VoIP or analog phone line is working properly. There can be many reasons why a VoIP phone line doesn’t work. First, the modem or router may not be set up properly. Next, the VoIP card may not be set up properly for you to use with your modem or router. Make sure that the VoIP card software is installed and working. If the modem or router is in use, make sure it is set up to forward port 8080
